You Only Live Once

“A lone gunman unleashed a rapid-fire barrage of bullets from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel late Sunday, killing at least 59 people and injuring more than 500 others…” I sipped my cup of tea as the headline of The New York Times caught my eyes.  I looked out the window and everything seemed just fine. It was a peaceful morning. The rising sun in front of me looked too perfect for me to imagine such tragedy to occur just opposite the globe. About 200,000 people die and born each day in this world. Regardless of your age, gender, race and religion, all of us have wondered about the one fact of life that unifies us: Death. I am of no exception. No one knows what death is, what we will face next and how it proceeds. I have always wanted to find the answer to this perhaps the biggest question of humanity “What is death?” or even before we talk about death, “What is life?” If God approaches you right now at this moment and asks “Are you ready?”, what will you say? I closed my eyes and imagined.

Death is not something new to us, nor is it something far away from us. I feel that it is always around us, like a shadow. It is not a big deal if I go to sleep tonight and never wake up again. The world will move on. There may still be traces of me somewhere in this world, just that I will not be here physically. And I appreciate this fact greatly. I cannot pretend I am fearless, but gratefulness has overwhelmed my fear of death. I am thankful to be able to open my eyes this morning, enjoy my favorite Jasmine tea, go to school and meet my friends and teachers. I am thankful for the existence of this world, or perhaps the existence of myself in this world. Life is short and we only live once. Everyone dies in the end. How we want to live this life, is completely up to us. We all know that time waits for no one, and whatever choices we make, cannot be undone. I do not believe in coincidence. Whether we deserve it or not, we were given this opportunity to live, and whether we like it or not, we should live it to the fullest.

To anyone who feels heartbroken and dejected in this world, these words are for you. Go and express your thoughts and feelings to the people around you. Show your gratitude and ask for forgiveness. Shout out your dissatisfaction and tear your heart out. We have the right to be happy and do what we want in this world because we only live once. Is it not fascinating to realize that there is only one “YOU” in this universe? There was not and there never will be another version of you in this universe. This amazing truth makes me look forward to my life, to experience the unique surprises await me in life. They say “Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile”. I cannot agree more with this quote. Perhaps sometimes we think too much about life. Anyways we will be dead before we even realize. If God approaches you right now at this moment and asks “Are you ready?”, I think I have an answer. I will say “OK” and follow him without much hesitation. But until then, I will enjoy life as much as I can. YOLO.
